It’s easy to notice the crowd, décor and selection of beverages in a bar; often, it’s fairly simple to tell the difference between regulars and newcomers. While the crowd, decor and beverages are on prime display at The Rose and Crown in Phoenix, being a newcomer is not so obvious.
“Even if it’s your first time, you feel accepted,” says Misty Neuhardt, a videographer who became a regular when she says she recognized the welcoming environment.
The pub is located in Heritage Park in Downtown Phoenix, where newcomers and regulars blend into a crowd of all-seeming-to-be regulars that are there for a good relaxing time.
“You don’t have to worry about fights breaking out. It’s cozy and homey,” Neuhardt says.
What makes this place unique is the not only the crowd, but the building itself, which is a house that has been around since 1900 and has since been renovated. Along with the history of the building, the décor offers a homey vibe, along with paintings by a local artist, flags and memorabilia from and old English restaurant.
“It’s not a place people get dressed up for. It’s like hanging out at someone house,” owner Don Phillippi says.
This English pub has various forms of entertainment, from playing darts and shooting pool, to flat screen TVs that feature sports games, making it a good place for group gatherings..
The bar also once housed about 100 different types of beer, but because of limited space the bar now serves 50.
“I think our beer selection has kind of made a name for us since we opened,” Phillippi says.
The light rail has given the pub good business because of easier access to Downtown Phoenix for those in the East Valley area. Local restaurants like Pizzeria Bianco, which is across from the pub, and the wine bar that is connected to the pizzeria bring waiting customers to The Rose and Crown.
