Life On a Budget: The Glory of Free

by Sebastien Bauge on November 4, 2009

budgetWhen you live on a budget, there comes a certain sense of pride in finding the best deals. Few things are better than watching someone else pay full-price for something you found for free. Marketers seem to know college students will take anything with a company name on it (provided it’s free). What student doesn’t have a magnet on their fridge, a T-shirt, or an entire drawer of pens emblazoned with various corporate logos?

This is a compilation of some of the greatest free things you can find for yourself on campus and online.

Free Legal Advice

Having a problem with your landlord? Lend a lot of money to a friend and didn’t get it back? Want an uncontested dissolution of your marriage? ASU Student Legal Assistance helps students with all these problems at no cost. According to the Web Site, the program provides advice from a licensed attorney and offers a free notary service. One limitation is that they cannot represent individuals in court.

University Testing and Scanning Services

This is your gateway to an entire world of free swag. University Testing and Scanning Services administers exams for a number of studies including some that give out incentives. There are all sorts of rewards, but the best ones are gift cards subjects can receive just for sitting in a room and taking a test. Last year I took three-hour exam for  $150 Amazon.com gift card. In order to be a part of a study, you need to go in to the office, located at 1130 E. University Dr. Ste. 204, and get on the testing list. If someone qualifies for a study, that person may get called in and the world of free stuff opens up.

Free Snuggie

Yes, you did just read that. For a limited time only people can get their hands on the beloved blanket with sleeves/bathrobe worn backward. Suzzly.com will ship you a free Snuggie at absolutely no cost to you. All you have to do is provide them with your address, name and phone number and your new blanket will be on your doorstep in six to eight weeks. The catch? One week after receiving the Snuggie you will get a call asking what you thought about it. This information will then be relayed back to the manufacturer for product improvement.

Are there two words I love more than “free” and “snuggie?” No. No, there are not.
