Puppets come in many shapes and sizes. For example, sock puppets, finger puppets, paper-bag puppets, marionettes and the list goes on and on. But most ASU students give up puppeteering somewhere between eating glue and taking shots of tequila. The Great Arizona Puppet Theater, however, has created a show for those secret, adult puppet lovers.
The Adult Puppet Slam is a vulgar, hilarious and audacious puppet show that shocking and entertaining. There’s a joke for everyone. It’s political commentary, social commentary, satire and a few (or many) vulgar sex jokes. Although each show is different, the show usually includes a few satirical presentations of typical nursery rhymes, as well as some made up skits and videos.
The puppeteers usually perform nursery rhymes for children, but every few weeks they put their talents towards entertaining adults. The puppets are intricately made and perform on a small stage inside an old Mormon church. At the front entrance, there is an elaborate museum of different puppet collections and props, as well as a small beer, wine and soda stand.
It’s a unique experience and the laughter is definitely worth the $8. Plus, it’s right on the light-rail track, so students can have a drink, take a ride and watch a show all without getting behind the wheel.
