CD Review: Coats and Villa

by Lauren Cusimano on April 15, 2009

4/5 Stars

Wayne Coats and Nicholas Villa are half of the equation that was the now-disbanded group, The Morning Kennedy Was Shot, a local indie-folk band from Mesa. Now, Coats & Villa, have combined forces to create: “Make A Record.”

The album is 11 tracks of smooth — yet eye-opening — songs about relationships, girls spewing bullshit and being happy and scared at the same time. Fans of The Morning Kennedy Was Shot will recognize Villa’s collected voice accompanied by a background wail. Coats’ drumming keeps up with Villa as the two run song by song without complaint.

“Stepping Stone” wakes up the listener, and would sound best on a sunny morning without much lined up for the day. The easy-to-dance-to track would be “Stars and the Moon,” with its western influence and clappable midsection. Crowd favorite, “Everybody Wants You,” comes up in the latter half of the record as the perfect wind down.
